Japanese Jiu-Jitsu (practiced at Judo) is a martial art that originated in Japan before being introduced to the Gracie family in Brazil in 1914 by Esai Maeda. Jiu-Jitsu was the battlefield art of the Samurai warriors, who were some if the most fierce fighters to have ever walked the earth. Jiu-Jitsu is the fastest growing mixed martial art, and provides a variety of benefits for anyone.


I recently decided that I would try to expand my horizons and join a Jiu-Jitsu gym. I was very quickly surprised at how insanely intense this sport was. For someone who has competed in lifting competitions, marathons, enlisted in the marine corps, and loves to push the limits, this art form is one that will continue to push my mental and physical limitations.


Martial arts can be used to learn self-defense, provide an excruciating workout, or just be a common hobby for you and your workout buddies. I am looking to use this to improve my discipline, control, and physical stamina (it’s pretty exhausting)


I would highly recommend checking out “Indiana Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy” (Lead by James Clingerman) if you are interested in a gym that has a lot to offer, with a staff worthy of their reputation. This is where I will be training in the future, as I thoroughly enjoy the environment and individuals affiliated with IBJJA.
